General Motors has launched OnStar Fleet Intelligence, a platform for fleet customers that brings vehicle data and GM's connected services into a single system. GM announced it in a Sept. 30 press release, according to WardsAuto, whose report was republished by Yahoo Autos.

The platform covers asset productivity, efficiency, risk management and total operating cost. GM says the aim is a single access point for managing fleet vehicles.

What fleet managers can do

According to the report, owners and managers can track orders, manage vehicles, and remotely access diagnostic data and telematics from each vehicle, including fuel efficiency and range. Geofencing is part of the toolset.

Administrative tasks are included too. Users can renew OnStar software and service plans and add new vehicles to a fleet from within the platform.

For larger fleets, fleet account numbers can be linked to OnStar Fleet Intelligence. That lets a manager oversee every vehicle under the account with one login, regardless of make or model, per the report. The source does not say how non-GM vehicles are connected or what data is available for them.

The Fleet AI Assistant

GM also added a Fleet AI Assistant, which uses generative AI to answer questions in natural language. The report gives two examples: asking for total idling time for each vehicle for the current month, or asking for the most utilized vehicles.

GM also describes using AI to analyze fuel costs across vehicles, routes and drivers, to help managers judge which changes would do most to cut fuel spend. The company says the assistant reduces manual analysis and reporting and is meant to help operators optimize performance and reduce vehicle downtime.

"Our fleet customers need simple, intuitive tools to manage their vehicles and efficiently manage operating costs," said Ian Hucker, global VP, GM Fleet, in a statement.

Arnie Magnotta, VP of OnStar Services & Digital Commerce, framed the platform as building on OnStar's connected-vehicle history. GM said the platform will keep evolving, with new features added over time.

What is not yet clear

The sources do not include pricing, availability by model or model year, or integration details. They also do not say whether the platform supports standards such as AEMP 2.0 / ISO 15143-3 or how it exchanges data with third-party telematics systems. Fleets running mixed makes will want those answers before treating it as a consolidated view.
