Geotab has launched Geotab Investigations, a tool for fleets that need to look into crashes, complaints, property damage and other incidents. According to Heavy Duty Trucking, it brings telematics data and related evidence into one case file instead of leaving them spread across separate systems.
The problem it targets
An incident investigation often involves several groups: operations and safety teams, insurers and legal departments. Vehicle and driver data may sit in one system, while photos, video, reports and emails sit somewhere else. Geotab says Investigations is meant to reduce that manual assembly and help fleets close cases faster. It also aims to leave a consistent record that can be used for insurance claims, compliance reviews or legal proceedings.
Sabina Martin, Geotab's vice president of product management, said fleet incidents have cost companies billions of dollars in litigation and reputational damage, largely because critical data remains siloed.
How it works
The tool uses telematics data a fleet already collects to reconstruct vehicle activity around an incident. Users can search by location and time to identify vehicles that may have been involved. They can then review trips, speed events, driver behavior and location information to build a timeline.
Geotab also points to a driver-protection use. When a complaint or claim does not match the data, the fleet has objective information on where a vehicle was and what it was doing.
Case file and workflow
Fleets can attach notes, emails, reports, documents, photos and video to the same case. A structured workflow tracks each case from opening to resolution and keeps an auditable record of the investigation. Operations, safety, insurance, compliance and legal teams can then work from the same information when reviewing an incident or deciding on a claim.
A stated limit
Geotab says Investigations is not intended to be an evidence-preservation or legal-hold system. Fleets remain responsible for preserving evidence and meeting legal requirements, and should consult legal counsel when litigation is involved. Fleets with active claims will still need their own retention process alongside the tool.
