Samsara is letting customers connect their fleet and operational data directly to third-party AI tools, according to FreightWaves. The company announced the Samsara Model Context Protocol (MCP) on Sept. 22. It lets authorized users query live information from their Samsara accounts through AI applications including ChatGPT, Claude and Microsoft Copilot, without building a custom integration.
What MCP exposes
More than 40 read-only tools are available at launch. They let an AI application retrieve information about vehicles, drivers, safety events, hours of service and other operational data. Developers can also use the tools when building their own AI agents.
Samsara says MCP runs on the same live operational data layer as Samsara Assistant. It also introduced Agent Studio at its Beyond 2026 customer conference. The distinction: Agent Studio is for building agents inside Samsara, while MCP connects Samsara data to outside AI applications and custom agents.
Permissions and limits
The connection uses the permissions already assigned to each user in Samsara. If a person cannot see a piece of data in Samsara, the connected AI tool cannot see it either. Samsara said each request is tied to the individual user making it, rather than relying on shared API keys or service accounts.
The tools are read-only. An AI application can pull records but cannot change them through MCP.
Early results
FreightWaves reported on Sept. 23 that Pam Polyak, owner of Wisconsin-based Polyak Trucking, used Claude to analyze her Samsara data. She asked it to find drivers spending more than 30 minutes on duty without driving while at the company's terminal. The analysis took about three minutes and found a driver spending more than 110 minutes per shift in the yard without driving. Polyak said the company recovered $53,000 in labor costs after identifying the issue.
She also used Claude to compare toll costs between drivers running the same lanes, which turned up a $50-per-load difference.
Beyond the fleet office
Samsara pointed to uses that combine fleet data with other business systems. Examples included comparing driver hours-of-service records with time and attendance data, analyzing fuel spending alongside mileage and idle time, and reviewing equipment utilization against rental agreements. The company said its ecosystem includes more than 400 integrations, APIs and developer tools.
Ken Apple, CTO at Mariner Logistics, said MCP connections already in place across other major business systems mean his team can now bring Samsara's operational context into the same workflows, rather than maintaining "yet another custom integration."
Availability and cost
Samsara MCP is available to customers now at no additional charge. The company said future MCP costs will be based on monthly usage. Details on that pricing were not provided in the FreightWaves report.
